Haemanthus coccineus

 Considero esta bela flor a primeira de um longo ciclo de floração anual no meu jardim. A flor é um espanto, tem tanto de estranho como de belo, e é um apontamento de cor muito interessante num espaço verde. Todos os anos, por esta altura, surgem do nada e em poucos dias morrem, e são substituídas por folhas de um verde muito intenso, longas (até 70cm), largas e rasteiras, semelhantes a umas grandes línguas... As folhas permanecem no jardim até à Primavera, desaparecendo tudo até uma nova floração.
É originária da África do Sul e é adequada para jardins em zonas climáticas 9-10. Não gosta de sol directo e após a queda das folhas, é de evitar regar a zona onde ela dorme.

  1. These are very impressive. I'm growing Haemanthus alba, but still ,a very immature plant... hoping it will flower soon.

  2. Hello Barry! Thanks for your comment. this plant has been associated with old houses in this region. It's one of the flowers older generations used to have in pots, and that's how I got the first bulbs, next to a ruin in the countryside. Unfortunately, I think it'll be impossible for me to get the alba here.. Could be great to have both growing next to each other.
